The Lakewood High School Theatre Company (LHSTC) is one of the largest and most comprehensive high school theatre programs in Colorado, serving over 140 students involved in acting, technical theatre, design, stage management, and production. The Company functions as both a curricular program and an extracurricular organization, allowing students to engage with theatre through classes, productions, and festivals throughout the school year.
LHSTC produces a robust season of work, including multiple fall plays, a spring musical, student-directed one-acts, and a Unified Theatre production, as well as showcases, scene performances, and participation in district and state festivals. Students regularly participate in events such as the Jefferson County Theatre Festival, Jefferson County Improv Festival, and the Colorado State Thespian Conference, gaining experience in performance, technical work, collaboration, and leadership. The spring musical is produced in collaboration with Lakewood’s music programs, reflecting the Company’s emphasis on interdisciplinary work and large-scale production.
In addition to productions, Lakewood offers broad selection of theatre courses that support students at every stage of experience. Classes range from introductory acting and technical theatre to intermediate acting, advanced acting, and IB Theatre (both SL and HL), which approaches theatre from a global and research-based perspective. Many advanced courses emphasize student leadership through directing, design, dramaturgy, and outreach work. Lakewood also pioneered the Unified Theatre program, an inclusive course model that brings together students with and without significant disabilities to collaboratively create and perform a fully realized production. This program has become a model for inclusive theatre education across the state and reflects the Company’s long-standing commitment to access, mentorship, and community. In 2024, the LHSTC was honored with the City of Lakewood Mayor's Inspiration Award, recognizing the significant impact to the Lakewood community the program provides.
The Lakewood Theatre Company has earned 42 Bobby G Award nominations since 2012 and has been recognized at the state and national level, including being named one of the top high school theatre programs in the country by the Educational Theatre Association (2018).
Whether students plan to pursue theatre professionally or simply want to be part of a challenging, collaborative creative environment, LHSTC provides sustained opportunities to learn, contribute, and grow through the art of theatre.
The mission of the Lakewood High School Theatre Company is to cultivate a community of passionate and skilled artists united by a commitment to greatness; To be a company which strives to create art rooted in truth, love, integrity, and above all: excellence without compromise.
The Lakewood High School Theatre Company envisions a student-centered program that values both artistic excellence and personal growth, preparing young artists to collaborate, lead, and engage thoughtfully with the world through theatre.
